How Do AWC Deck Span Tables Work?

The American Wood Council (AWC) publishes DCA 6 (Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide), which includes standardized tables for exterior deck framing.

To use span tables:

1. Select joist lumber size (e.g., 2x6, 2x8, 2x10, 2x12).
2. Select spacing (12 in, 16 in, or 24 in on center).
3. Identify wood species group and grade (#2 or better).
4. Locate allowable span in feet and inches.
5. Ensure actual ledger-to-beam distance is less than or equal to the table value.

Deck Joist vs Interior Floor Joist Spans

Exterior deck joists face wet service conditions, temperature fluctuations, and lateral guardrail loads. Because wet wood exhibits lower allowable design strength, deck joists generally carry shorter max span limits than interior floor joists of identical lumber size.

Worked Example: 2x8 Deck Joists at 16” On Center

Suppose your deck plan uses 2x8 #2 Southern Pine joists spaced at 16 inches on center. The distance from house ledger board to beam center is 10 feet 6 inches:

1. Table Lookup: Standard AWC DCA 6 table allows 11 ft 10 in max clear span for 2x8 #2 Southern Pine at 16” o.c.
2. Actual Site Measurement: 10 ft 6 in clear span.
3. Comparison: 10 ft 6 in is less than 11 ft 10 in.
